Tour Overview

Discover one of Banff National Park’s most spectacular winter experiences on the Johnston Canyon Winter Icewalk.

Depart from Banff and travel through the beautiful Bow Valley to Johnston Canyon, where winter transforms the canyon into a magical landscape of snow, ice and frozen waterfalls.

With your professional guide, follow the Johnston Canyon trail along the canyon walls and across the famous steel catwalks. Continue through the narrow canyon to the Lower Falls, then make your way toward the spectacular Upper Falls, where the frozen waterfall creates an incredible natural ice formation.

This is a guided winter hike rather than a walk directly on the frozen creek. Ice cleats and hiking poles are provided to help make the trail safer and more comfortable in winter conditions.

After the walk, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate and a maple cookie before returning to Banff.

The reference experience includes approximately 2–2.5 hours of walking within the four-hour tour, covering about 5.4 km

What to Bring

Because you will spend most of the tour outdoors, proper winter clothing is very important.

• Waterproof winter boots
• Thermal/base layers
• Snow pants or waterproof trousers

• Neck warmer or scarf

• Personal medication

Important: Guests should have suitable winter clothing and footwear. Mountain temperatures can change quickly. The reference operator notes that its winter tours can encounter conditions ranging from approximately -27°C to +10°C

Does the tour actually walk on the ice?

No.

This is important for your website because the name “Icewalk” could confuse customers.

Guests do not walk directly on the frozen creek or waterfall. The route follows the winter trail and steel catwalks built into the canyon walls, providing views of the frozen water below. Banff Tours

This is not a completely easy sightseeing walk.

Guests should be comfortable walking approximately 5.4 km in winter conditions. There are some short climbs and elevation changes.

A minimum of 5 passengers is required for each trip to proceed at the advertised group rate.

Group Price: CAD $90 per person for a minimum group of 5 passengers.
